Susie Cooper

Susie Cooper began her career at Grays in 1922, then  started her own business in 1929, initially at the Chelsea works.  Demand for her designs meant that she soon outgrew these premises.  In 1931, Wood and Sons offered her space at their factory and she moved into the Crown Works in Burslem.

During this period her designs were used on a variety of earthenware shapes, some of these shapes were also used by Radford as shown below.  Production continued until 1942 when the war caused the factory to close.  Edward Radford had a large house in High Lane Burslem at this time and apparently stored much of Susie's stock in his cellar in case of air raids.

After the war Susie continued her work, using bone china from around 1950, until the 1980's.

Both of the Susie Cooper designs almost certainly date from the period 1931 to 1942.  This would suggest that both the Radford pieces shown also date from the 1940's or earlier - even though the quaiche bowl below has the "Handpainted" mark.  Both items, however, have the shape number handwritten, not impressed as on later shapes.
